What are some tips on possibly becoming a fashion designer?

I'm only 13 years old but I am so passionate and very into being a fashion designer. The thing is that people always say to me, "Oh, you'll never be a fashion designer. Everyone wants to be one!" Any tips on how to become one? Just for the future.

Draw live models, draw live models, draw live models.

I could not emphasize this enough. Take art classes, specifically figure drawing classes. Hone your drawing skills in general, for that matter, it's a useful skill.

If you can't find a free class, find some people with similar interest in fashion and convey to them the importance of drawing from life, draw each other. A decent book is "Drawing for the Absolute and Utter Beginner" by Claire Garcia, you'll learn basic technique on rendering what you see. And, once you advance a bit, I suggest "Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery" by Burne Hogarth, which is about wrinkles and folds in fabric, both in general and on the human body in particular. I also understand there are books on drawing for fashion, but that's not really my area of expertize so I can't suggest a good one. You can look these up at amazon, though, or ask for them at a book store.

Definitely start studying art and textiles. Begin building up a portfolio of sketches and art work. Take some sewing and design classes outside of school in the evenings to build up some actually clothing for your portfolio. Aim for a fashion university and work very, very hard. Once you're there you'll be surrounded by specialists who've been in the business for decades and can you help you. It's also advisable to back-up your fashion courses with some form of business studies.

Take some drawing classes so you can draw your fashion ideas well, and also learn how to sew because in fashion school you are going to have to know how to make your clothes because no one is going to do it for you. Also you'll need to be making a portfolio to get into fashion school. You are a great age to get a good start on this! You totally can do it!

learn to take critisisim well, listening, education. Good luck

How would you describe upcoming fashion trends?

For teenage girls, how would you describe the upcoming fashion season? What appears to be "in" regarding clothing and what appears to be "fashionable" in regards to hair styles?

This year spring it season has to include bold colours, boyish preppy, tribal patterns(africa style), new nautical, flowers print, pale colour, bold patterns and wide leg jeans are still in.

*ahem, thanks to SEVENTEEN. :) & go read VOGUE :)

A great way track trends and see what fashionable people are wearing is to join an online fashion community like http://www.chictopia.com. It allows you to see the latest styles and what the trendiest people are wearing on a day to day basis. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20080302175406AAudbow&kid=PqxOIWHKO3gn7Nfc1V31&s=comm&date=2008-10-21+16%3A53%3A07&.crumb=

Words to describe upcoming fashion trends:

Voluminous; the more volume the better, Nude/neutral colors; say goodbye dark nails, hello nude or neutral nails!, Ethereal/Roman; earthy stuff is in like goddess dresses and gladiator sandals are in!

Hope this helps! :)

for teens, really anything is ok if its your style, i mean if your an ae. a&f kina girl, in your mind it will be there spring stuff, but if your more of a hottopic girl, it will be there stuff. teens fashion goes more by stereotypes im sad to say. but in womans fashion, gladiator sandals aregoing to be hudge.

How does one become knowledgeable about fashion?

I'm a guy who formerly had absolutely no sense of fashion or style. Clothes were just something you put on to keep warm. However, with some coaxing from my girlfriend, I started buying some "brand name" clothes and I started really enjoying the way I was looking. Since then, I've gotten an interest in fashion and looking good, but I don't have a clue where to start. How do you go about figuring out what suits you and what's in fashion? I want to learn to develop my own style eventually, but I also wanna learn to understand fashions and trends. Any suggestions?

Get a magazine subscription to ESQUIRE and GENTLEMEN'S QUARTERLY. (GQ).

Those two will show you. They are fashion magazines for guys.

Trust them. They're good. Just look at the pictures and you can see what the hottest looks are.

They also have articles that can tell you all kinds of interesting fashion tips.

Good Luck! Your girlfriend is sooooooo lucky!

A great way to track trends and keep up with style is to join an online fashion community such as http://www.chictopia.com. It allows you to see what the trendiest people are wearing day to day. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20061229214108AAFQmh2&kid=PqxOIWHKO3gn7Nfc1V31&s=comm&date=2008-10-21+16%3A49%3A54&.crumb=

try fashion magazines.

but u know, u really ought to try on whatever YOU think is good, whatever YOU feel comfortable in.......with a few tips frm friends of course!

just dress your own way, express yourself, set new trendz - and hav fun!

Awesome question...I was the same way, my g/f got me interested in some brand names (abercrombie, hollister, etc.) even tho i had no interest in them whatsoever. Now, I am kinda picky when it comes to clothing. Good show to watch is Queer Eye for the Straight Guy to get some ideas (lol) and not take fashion over the top like they do. You don't wanna be considered gay...but you don't wanna be considered "non-fashionable" either.

I almost forgot to mention: www.askmen.com

You can flip through fashion magazines that tell you the dos and the don'ts of fashion. gd mahazines will show the fashion successes of male celebreties too. there's also a good show called what not to wear that you can watch to see what kind of clothes are good for you. gd luck with developing your own stlye.

You can easily find out whats in fashion by media and noticing what everyone else is wearing. You can decide and find out what styles and colours suit you by asking professionals, watching shows and visiting certain sites or just simply observing what looks best. However, some people do not know how to dress themselves, and those people are considered that they do not have a "sense" of style or fashion. Some people have it, some people don't and just follow what everyone else is wearing.

Start watching Queer Eye for the Straight Guy if it is still on. Other than that, I am sure there are fashion magazines for men, like GQ.

Or even Google it on the web. Look up latest fasion trends for men.

What to wear to fashion college admissions meeting?

I am applying to attend a college with a very select fashion program, and the admissions advisor asked me to come in to go over what I need in my portfolio and fill out and application form.

I want to treat it like an interview and dress nicely but since its a fashions program I was thinking that I should show that I understand the fashion industry. Any suggestions on what to wear that has a happy medium?

I would stay away from the warmer colors and stick with the cooler colors. Particularly navy and grey.

What is the best fashion runway music to put on a fashion show to get models energized to walk the runway like they own it?

a cool remix usually. like the kind you might hear at abercrombie

usually they dont play regular songs. Usually something modern and chic. Something simple and sophisticated

How would I plan a fashion show in which parts of the proceeds goes to Charity for Homeless Veterans?

I would like to plan a fashion show to donate a huge portion of the proceeds to a charity that helps homeless veterans. Even if this help one family to get into a home I would feel as though it would be a success. But I would love to know how would I go by organizing something like this? I have the budget for this event but that is pretty much it. How would I go by getting sponsors? If anyone have any experience in putting together something like this, please let me know. It would be greatly appreciated.

I would contact the charity that you are going to help, sell your idea to them, and they will probably lend you their expertise and ideas for a successful event.

What jeans are in fashion for college guys at this time?

Honestly, I have absolutely no sense of fashion sense. I don't know what guys are wearing lately, and what are the in-fashion clothes. So if anyone can tell me what jeans or for that matter any other kind of clothes are particularly trendy or in fashion now, I'd appreciate it. I may decide it's not a good fit for me, but I'd like to be better informed rather than wearing the same clothes I've worn for years.

Thanks!

well, my boyfriend is in college, and i think he has a great style!

i suggest you go to abercrombie and american eagle, go for the slim fit jeans, which are not baggy and not too skinny, make sure they are like a dark blue, and dont be afraid to have them kind of loose on the waist. but not baggy.

also, urban outfitters and hollister have great skinny jeans for guys.

same style and color will work.

I'm a sophomore in college, I go to Pepperdine Univ. in Cali, and all the guys at my school are dressed pretty nice, uhm, for example, in the fall season, like 7 for all mankind jeans and A&F jeans, but any nice looking ones like levis are acceptable they don't have to be like $300 jeans to look nice. A nice polo with a white undershirt looks good with a dark or light wash pair of jeans or a button down shirt with a crew neck undershirt. Nice tennis shoes or dress shoes are a must, but never dress shoes with jeans- get a pair of adidas or polo shoes, basically anything white for shoes. Sweatshirts like hoodies are nice for lazy days!

kay.

if u wanna look like a awesome kid!!! if u have a good build...tight jeans(with a awesome colored belt and bet buckle) slim fit(also colorful) top umm like high top shoes slip ons orrrrr mabye just skate shoes converse high or low doesnt matter to much...if u need a hoodie or something..have a look at hottopic has sweet hoodies(there awesome haha) but dont get the ones with no arms...ur good to go after than...dont go for the big but gay brands like american egale and holliester coz like everyones wereing them and they are really gay...

for the jeans dooo not get thos ****** bootcut peices of crap or them ow az ones

if you have money, go with the designer jeans like 7 Jeans for All Mankind, or True Religions, or Rock and Republic.

but it's okay if you don't want to spend over 100 bucks on jeans so go to American Eagle, or Aeropostale to get jeans there.

http://www.lj-fashionhouse.com/index.php go there to have a look.

What is the absolute dorkiest fashion trend in the entire history of mankind?

I think history will prove that it is "sagging" (AKA "housing"). Sagging is a fad that is considered passé by teens now. It reached its peak around 2003. Sagging is wearing trousers, shorts, or jeans below the waist, hanging around the butt area, with the underwear showing. Practiced mostly by young urban males. Closely associated with rap music and gang culture, and has its origins in the prohibition of belts among prison inmates. Also common among skateboarders (or punk fashion style). Initially worn by Southern California gang members, it became a national phenomenon when gangsta rap artists from LA became popular in the early 90s.

I would have to agree with you. I can't tell you how many businesses I've walked out of because I didn't want my daughter to have to look at boy's underwear. Many of my friends have done the same. I was going to say leg warmers in the 80's, but I've never walked out on a place of business because it's employees wore leg warmers. 80)

The dorkiest fashion? The strange popularity of polyester boxers, considering their health risks and pointless use without even providing support. You may as well wear nothing at all. In my opinion, they're pretty dorky/nerdy. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20071008093217AA52DBk&kid=AqJTWXHdB1Ml5f.658sW&s=comm&date=2008-09-14+19%3A00%3A00&.crumb=

k u must be like an old dude cuz it its still hot 4 guys 2 wear their pants like that. All guys do that it looks so hot!! and gangster lol.

the worst fashion tend is emo.

i doubt that it reached it's peak in 2003, because it is 2007 and it seems like even the toddlers are wearing their pants like that now!

I don't know if I necessarily agree with the "history will prove" comment but I would agree that "saggin" IS dumb.

Also - "punks" in the sense of punk music, don't wear "saggin" clothes, also a number of skaters don't either (gets in the way of tricks) they wear skinny jeans or straight legged jeans.

I think a trend that is even dumber then "saggin" jeans is stereotyping.

I would have to say, these days its the EMO look... well, let me clarify... guys wearing girls skinny jeans.... God awful! and I think the "M.C. Hammer pants", they were BAD!

I completely agree. Where I live, in Dallas, they're trying to make sagging illegal. You'll get a ticket.

lol :D

Legg warmers ALA 80's GAAAGGHH!

Crocs.

There are no real great health benefits tied to them, no matter how comfortable they are. Crocs are chunky, ugly and make you look shorter and heavier than you are. Why would anyone want to spend $30 on a pair of shoes covered in holes? I just don't get it.

I think it's shoulder pads for women. What was the significance? Why the hell did women of the 80's want to look like Muscle Man Randy Savage? Shoulder pads! Destroy decent thrift store finds for over 15 years! Damn you Melanie Griffin in Working Girl, Damn you!

While the "sagging" trousers are definately one of the stupidest trends I've seen in my lifetime (especially amongst skaters... since doesn't that make it HARDER to skate?)

But have you SEEN some of the fashion trends that came out of the 1970's?? ...collars & lapels on shirts that could've doubled as aircraft wings... bell-bottom trousers that were so big you could house a family of midgets underneath them!

It's probably not the "dorkiest" ... there've been quite a few trends in the world which did REAL physical harm to people like foot binding, neck / earlobe / tongue stretching, celts painting themselves with woad (which was a narcatic) - and don't get me started on the whole piercing their faces with wood shards, people putting burning weeds and embers and inhaling the smoke, cocaine, casual intravenous drug use, and anorexic fashion models.

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm iidk

i think its the wide leg jeans or the bell-bottom pants.

How should I decorate a room to give a REAL fashion environment?

I don't know how to put this in a better sentence.

What I want to do is actually trying to decorate a small room, not mine, and the room is actually temporary, it's for a big event, but what kind of stuff/decorations can I put inside to give it a fashion look?

Like, if you've been backstage in a runway show, what can you see?

Or in a fashion designing room, what can you see?

I want it to have a REAL fashion environment. Thanks!

Maybe like mannequins even though they are expensive. You can put like a sewing kit on a desk and maybe a ruler to "measure". Put clothes on a rack and not in a closet. A couch. Although it's kind of expensive if it wll last a long time its worth it. Also a birhtday or holiday can work to get everything.

wow, if u are a girl, i think that u should put like bright colors, but be careful because some bright colors look really great with some dark colors, but not all do. Neon colors should be great. Such as a neon yellow!!! or a neon hot pink!! And your bed, if u are doing a neon color, i think that your bed sheets should be like a blackish, a kinda dark color, but don't try to put too much neon and dark colors!!!!HOPE THIS WRKS!!!!! GOOD LUCK!

lots of flashy big pop out colours!!!!!! and stuff like that!

How do you organize a Fashion show funderaiser?

what are some of the things i may need to make this a success ?How many people should i have in the fashion show to make it big? Should i have children as well as women? How much should i sell the tickets for and how many should be printed? What are some of the extra things to accomodate the show? How many tickets should be given to everyone? The cause of the funderaiser is to help a family from foreclosure.Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thank you

Judging by the reason of the fundraising, i assume the fashion show fundraiser is going to be a low-key one, right? Because the cost of a good Venue, models and rental of microphones, lighting and sound/music equipment as well as creating the boarded "runway", banner for the logo of the clothes company as well as printing of the tickets will set you back a VERY BIG amount. Also, not everyone u give tickets to can be expected to turn up. Every 100 tickets sent, u may only expect a turnout of 30%-50%. (unless it's a big branded fashion show.) Some venues charge 3K just for venue rental only.

I'd suggest that you approach a college and get students to model, or relatives and friend's daughters. Rent the hall of a community centre/art gallery and use their sound equipment and lighting. Instead of having to build a runway, you could get models to model around seated guest tables instead. Also, ask a local clothes store if they are willing to participate. Do get them to provide clothes in your model's sizes. Get the clothes a few days in advance so that they can be STEAM-ironed out. Get the models to wear neutral colored heels. Tickets can be printed at a print shop nearby. The smaller d tickets, the cheaper it is. Get it printed on A3 size sheets and cut the tickets to size yourself to save cost. Also, to hire a makeup artist for the day may cost $250, so get models to do their own makeup but advise them according to the clothes picked out. GOOD LUCK!

you could also sell cake slices or drinks at the same time to earn more from the crowd....since it is quite low cost.

How do I get a job in fashion merchandising with a degree in marketing?

hi there.

i have the same problem as yours!

my dream job is in fashion merchandising but im working on my management degree.

Try to apply for an assistant buyer or something, so u can deal with fashion without having to design one =D

goodluck :)

You and your fashion merchandising!...LOL

Try to get a job with a big clothing company such as; Guess, Levi's, Versace, The Gap, etc.....

I am sure they offer internships. Go for it!!

Good Luck.

How can I go about making my own fashion doll molds?

I am interested in making my own 12" fashion doll because the really good ones that are for sale are SO EXPENSIVE. Does anyone know how can I go about making my own fashion doll molds using plastic, rubber or other materials? I am not interested in transforming a doll that is already made, but starting from scratch. Serious replies only. Thanks.

You will have to make an original model. One method is to work with never hardening soft modeling oil clay (plasticine) when you have a version you like, you paint it with many layers of latex molding material (or use expensive RTV silicone molding rubber), back the soft mold with plaster and peel off the rubber from the clay carefully. If you wish, you can keep the keep the model and modify and rework it to make a different version without building the whole thing from scratch (like different head shape, bustier or flatter, etc. but legs, waist, shoulder, arms not changed.)

If you are going to make a figure with movable arms and legs it get more complicated as you will model each of those separately and have to model the front and the back and cast in separate pieces so you can fasten the arms and legs (and head?) with elastic.

Once the mold is made, you then can cast in tough casting wax for your own use, or get involved in clear and opaque casting resins.

For examples of the first part of the process see

http://users.ticnet.com/mikefirth/castgobl.htm#HDFTGOB

I don't do resin casting, so you will have to explore for the second part.

http://www.alumilite.com/ looks promising on a quick Google search

How do fashion designers come out with the same trend for each season?

For these designers to be so fashion forward, they all come out w/the same seasonal trends. I heard that the editor of vogue looks at each designer's collection in advance of fashion shows and decides which look is "in".

Magazine editors and fashion buyers/designers watch the market year round, and watch where the trends are headed. Based on what the magazines pick (and all the buyers/designers also subscribe to each magazine) is what is marketed to the general public. The public (believe it or not) actually pick the trends based on what we buy... and based on what we buy helps determine the trends for the next seasons.

After a trend is determined, notice that the celebrities will start to wear them, they will appear in magazines, and sites like www.thefashionbitch.com, IN Style, etc. will start promoting those trends. When the public sees all the promotion for these items, then they buy it, which helps promote the trend. :)

Major fashion designers start working on their collection for a specific season as much as year in advance. Why ? It's not just about the look, but also about the logistics, such as fabric sourcing, runway shows, and production. The runway shows are an important pivotal moment, however. This is where magazine editors and buyers make decisions about the "must-haves" and the "oh, no" concepts and ideas that come together to make up a new trend.

Once the fashion magazines start promoting a particular concept as a trend worth following, some designers, late to the party, may pick up on it. Take the example of "dark lace" for this Fall season. It started with Prada showing dark lace dresses on the runway months ago. Now other designers are starting to include this in their collections. Some designers are interpreting this "trend" in gothic inspired dresses with dark lace. Others are working "dark lace" into elegant evening gowns or even purses.

How did WW1 influence the fashion of American Women in the 1920s?

I have to write an enormous essay for my school diploma. My question is, (along the lines of) How did WW1 influence the development of flapper fashion, in the 1920s.

Any suggestions would be very helpful, also, if i could be directed to some quality sources (especially newspaper articles, from archives and the like, and reliable websites) that would be fabulous.

Cheers!

Up until WW1, wedding dresses were always black, but after WW1, because of the excess of parachute cloth, wedding dresses were white.

What fashion design game is best for a young child on the Nintendo DS Lite?

My daughter is five and her big brother has DS that she really loves. We are thinking about getting her one for Christmas. She wants a fashion design game and mentioned Imagine Fashion Designer. I want to know if that is appropriate and easy enough for her to do on her own. I would also like some other options for a fashion design game that would be good for her.

My fashion studio is more simple and easy AND fun than imagine Fashion designer, it really was HARD and all these menus for nothing.

It was a horrible game and "my fashion studio" really redeemed the company in question.

So go with "my fashion studio" not imagine fashion designer!

How to get an internship for fashion magazines in Australia?

Im only fifteen but im very interested in pursuing a career in a fashion magazine. Perhaps starting with an internship. Any pointers that you have for me, what kind of subjects i should be doing, or how i could possbily apply for a job when i get older. Also if you have any ideas for good magazines in Australia like Vouge..

in yr 10 i did my work experience week at vogue australia which was fun but i would recommend a magazine like madison as it is more content driven and vogue seemed to lack something, also russh would be amazing to try, two of my friends did their work experience week at magazines one at bazaar and the other at madison, the girl at madison seemed to have had a really good time so that would be good for you to look into so that you can make sure fashion is what you want to do.

the fashion business is extremly bitchy though so be prepared.

In school keep you english up and try doing an extension english for the hsc. also whatever you do, do not bother with textiles as it is completely irrelevant for working at one of these mags unless u want to be a fashion assistant which may as well be furniture. in uni you should look into going to sydney uni and doing a journalism course, the marks for this are really high at about 98 i think

btw i assumed u lived in sydney as most headoffices for the mags are in the sydney cbd

hope this helps :)
